People are always interested in funny little details about Jamie's hike. Some people are curious about how much his pack weighs. Some people are curious about how much it costs to do a long thru-hike. So that makes for a good (?), interesting (?), easy (?) topic!
"Details about gear might be a pretty easy blog topic to put together." - Me earlier today
"There's a spreadsheet for that on the OneDrive." - Jamie always
"This spreadsheet has, like, 8 bazillion tabs and I don't even know what half of this stuff is..." - Me later
But it's frequently asked about, and I do think it illustrates why these hikers are SO focused on weights and measures, so here goes. The CDT gear list:
Just off the top, I can see where this list has already been tweaked slightly. The LaSportiva Jackal II shoes have been replaced by the LaSportiva Ultra Raptor II Lows. I did a quick weighing of an old pair of the Ultra Raptors, and they came in as follows:
I guess sometimes what the feet want, the feet get, even if it adds a half-pound of additional weight! Feet are just too important to compromise on a long hike.
It's all about trade-offs. He also decided to send back his separate Sony Camera and related accessories, so that will compensate for the additional weight of the shoes. Now, he SAID he was sending it back because he just wasn't really able to use it in the way he'd originally envisioned, but he didn't decide to send the camera back until AFTER he decided to go with the heavier shoes, and I don't KNOW he was specifically looking to offset, but it's a possibility! It may be more likely that he is just constantly fine-tuning and trying to lighten his load. Either way, the fancy camera got nixed. (Rest assured all who follow his Instagram, he's very good with his iPhone, so quality pics will still be had!)
Now I wonder what will be jettisoned when it's time for the bear spray!
Because one thing is for sure, bear spray is just too important to compromise when you're in grizzly country!
